What is the definition of an Aboriginal person?

The definition of an Aboriginal person, as defined by the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983, is a person who:

  • is of Aboriginal descent
  • identifies as being Aboriginal;
  • is accepted by the Aboriginal community in which you live.

How can I trace my family history?

If you are an Aboriginal person and want to search your family history, you can begin by contacting the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). AIATSIS is Australia’s premier institution for research into Indigenous issues. It plays a vital role in helping to reunite Indigenous people who have been separated from their families and communities.

Does KLALC provide emergency housing?

Kempsey LALC is not in the position to provide emergency housing. KLALC does provide housing to eligible members who are on the KLALC housing waiting list, however the KLALC housing waiting list is quite long and the wait for housing can take some time.

Does KLALC provide loans or financial assistance?

Under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 KLALC is not able to provide loans or financial assistance to its members or any other person.
